The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPPF), Rotimi Oyedepo, has expressed his unwavering commitment to pursuing justice for members of Nigeria's Armed Forces who lost their lives while serving the country, describing their sacrifices as a remarkable contribution to the nation.
On the occasion of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which was observed last Thursday, Mr. Oyedepo paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, highlighting that their courage and dedication were vital for the safety of Nigerians and the nation's stability.
"The deceased were not just soldiers; they were fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, husbands, and wives who prioritized duty over personal safety and service over self-interest," Mr. Oyedepo stated. "They faced danger head-on to protect innocent lives, enabling Nigerians to live in peace."
Mr. Oyedepo, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and took office as DPP in December 2025 following the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu, reiterated his role as the chief federal prosecutor of the country.
He emphasized that every act of terrorism, banditry, treason, and violent crime associated with the deaths of these soldiers would be thoroughly examined and prosecuted until resolution. "I commit to doing my utmost within the legal framework," he stated, adding that the criminal justice system must remain active and that the sacrifices of these fallen heroes should not be in vain.
The DPPF further reached out to the bereaved families, acknowledging their profound loss while assuring them that the names of their loved ones are forever engraved in Nigeria's history as symbols of bravery. He also commended the ongoing efforts of current military personnel, praising their endurance and courage.
"They bear not just weapons but also the hopes of countless Nigerians who yearn for a more secure and resilient nation," he remarked. His statements arrive amid escalating concerns regarding terrorism and violent crime in Nigeria, where government initiatives to prosecute terror suspects are ongoing, and military efforts to combat armed groups in various states continue.
Mr. Oyedepo concluded his address with prayers for the eternal peace of the departed, comfort for their families, and renewed strength for those defending the nation against security threats.
