Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to shift focus from pronouncements to concrete actions concerning the recent surge in killings across the nation.
Abubakar invoked a statement made by President Tinubu to the families of victims of an attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, Plateau State. During that meeting at Yakubu Gowon Airport, the President reportedly pledged, "To the victims, there is nothing I can give you, whether in billions of naira, but I can console you and promise that this experience will not repeat itself."
However, Abubakar noted that within 48 hours of this assurance, further violent incidents were reported in Plateau, extending to Kaduna, Katsina, Benue, and Nasarawa states.
In a public statement shared via his social media channels, Abubakar challenged the President to fulfil his pledge. He highlighted that the continued violence, including an attack in Benue State that resulted in numerous fatalities just days after the Angwan Rukuba incident, suggested his earlier words were "hollow." He emphasized that the Commander-in-Chief must effectively address the governance challenges.
Abubakar also expressed concern over reports of families fleeing their homes in a Nasarawa community due to imminent threats of attack, followed by a weekend attack in Kaduna State. He reiterated that the fundamental duty of any government is to safeguard its citizens' lives and property and ensure their well-being.
"Enough of these hollow rhetoric, Mr. President. It is time to fold your sleeves and get to work," Abubakar declared, urging immediate action.
The former Vice President concluded by extending his sympathies and prayers to all families who have lost loved ones in these tragic attacks.
