Three years following the gruesome killing of four soldiers in Ashaka Aboh, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, the Department of State Services (DSS) apprehended two individuals believed to be involved.
The arrested suspects, identified as Ufuoma Sunday James and Lawrence Umuakpero Oboguayivwgue, are also linked to the beheading of Chief Okwudili Obi, known as Odumodu, a self-proclaimed traditional leader from the Asemoku community amid the communal unrest that occurred in 2023.
In February 2023, military forces undertaking a peacekeeping operation in response to a conflict between the Kwale and Asemoku communities were reportedly ambushed by armed individuals allegedly under the command of James. This attack led to the deaths of the soldiers and the looting of their weapons.
After gathering credible intelligence, DSS operatives successfully apprehended the suspects, who have reportedly admitted their participation in these murders and have disclosed their involvement in arms trafficking and other violent crimes.
The two suspects were subsequently brought before a state high court in Kwale, where a judge ordered their remand in a correctional facility awaiting further trial.
"This arrest marks a significant advancement in the DSS's ongoing investigations into unresolved cases, reflecting the agency's unwavering commitment to achieving justice despite the time elapsed," commented a DSS official who wished to remain anonymous.
The official further emphasized the importance of coordinated intelligence efforts in uncovering new leads from long-ignored cases, reassuring local communities that violent offenses, especially those directed against security personnel, will face consequences.
