The Department of State Services (DSS) has successfully rescued 44 Ghanaian nationals from a 'criminal network' that specializes in enticing unsuspecting foreigners by presenting false job opportunities.

In a statement released over the weekend, the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that all 44 rescued individuals were safely brought back to Accra, the capital of Ghana, on Friday.

According to the Ministry, the operation was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the DSS along with other security agencies in both Nigeria and Ghana.

The victims who were rescued in various localities, specifically Imo Ekpo, Ifuho, and Ekpri Nsukara within Uyo and Ikot-Ekpene LGAs, were comprised of 27 males and 17 females.

Upon their return, the victims were received by Mr. Leslie Lawson, an official from the Ghana High Commission, at the DSS office located in Uyo.

The Ghana High Commission issued a statement that elaborated on the situation, highlighting a prior announcement made on March 13, 2026, warning the public against engaging with 'QNET' and similar illicit schemes. It stated, "These 44 Ghanaian citizens were rescued from a fraudulent recruitment network in Nigeria."

The statement further explained that the victims had been lured by deceptive methods, such as through social media and informal recruitment platforms, promising them jobs and travel opportunities. However, once they arrived, they faced exploitation, which included limited movement, coercion, and pressure to recruit additional victims into the scheme.

A coordinated operation conducted on March 16, 2026, with the involvement of Nigerian security authorities, including the DSS, in collaboration with related institutions from Ghana, facilitated the victims’ return to Accra on March 20, 2026.

The Ghanaian government is actively working with its Nigerian counterparts and other stakeholders to dismantle the criminal networks engaged in such trafficking activities. They are also taking measures to ensure the protection, recovery, and reintegration of the rescued individuals.

The Ministry expressed its gratitude to the Nigerian government for its swift response and ongoing cooperation. It reiterated a strong repudiation of human trafficking and fraudulent recruitment practices, emphasizing its dedication to safeguarding the rights of Ghanaian citizens both domestically and globally.

The public has been urged to exercise extreme caution, verify all job and travel offers through official sources, and avoid interactions with unverified individuals or organizations.

In conclusion, the statement reaffirmed the Ministry's unwavering commitment to the protection of Ghanaian nationals wherever they may be.
