Catholic masses across Dubai have been suspended following a rise in tensions across the Middle East, with churches citing safety concerns ahead of the Easter period.
St Francis of Assisi Church in Jebel Ali announced the cancellation of all its services until further notice, adhering to government directives. This decision comes amid reports of missile and drone activity in the area, reportedly linked to the ongoing regional conflict.
Officials have advised parishioners against visiting church grounds, emphasizing the paramount importance of ensuring community safety and well- being.
Similarly, St Mary’s Catholic Church confirmed that its services would be halted. The church plans to offer a Good Friday mass via online streaming, enabling worshippers to participate remotely.
These disruptions occur during Holy Week, a significant period in the Christian liturgical calendar leading up to Easter Sunday.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo XVI has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, communicating with global leaders to advocate for peace. He recently held separate telephone discussions with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, focusing on the humanitarian consequences of the ongoing wars.
During his call with President Herzog, the Pope underscored the necessity of reopening diplomatic channels to establish a lasting resolution in the Middle East. He also stressed the imperative of protecting civilian populations and upholding international humanitarian law.
The discussions with President Zelensky centred on the protracted conflict in Ukraine. Both leaders addressed the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and explored avenues for securing the release of prisoners.
President Zelensky highlighted that attacks on Ukraine persisted even as these discussions were taking place, underscoring the continued challenges in achieving a ceasefire.
The Vatican indicated that the Pope expressed his hope that concerted international cooperation could contribute to ending hostilities and fostering a just and enduring peace.
The suspension of religious services in Dubai serves as a clear indication of the broader impact of the conflict on civilian life, as security anxieties continue to affect communities throughout the region.
