The Enugu State Police Command has successfully dismantled a suspected international human trafficking operation aimed at prostitution. This operation resulted in the arrest of a 50-year-old female suspect, identified as Ibekwe Nkiru, along with the rescue of a young female victim, whose identity has been withheld for safety reasons.

This incident occurred on January 16, 2026, thanks to prompt action taken by members of the Igbo-Eze South Police Division who acted on reliable intelligence.

Enugu police arrest suspect Ibekwe Nkiru related to human trafficking operation.

Initial inquiries reveal that the victim, originally from Abia State, was allegedly misled into quitting her job in Aba with assurances of a better- paying employment in Senegal, which was later found to involve prostitution. On the same day, around 7 p.m., the suspect, based in Amorji-Nike, Enugu, reportedly took the victim to a shrine in the Alor-Agu Community of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area. This was done under directions from other members of the trafficking syndicate who remain at large, to make her swear an oath of allegiance in preparation for her intended trafficking to Senegal.

After receiving the alert at approximately 8:00 p.m., the Divisional Police Officer promptly organized a team to the site, leading to the arrest of the suspect and the rescue of the victim. The victim has since been debriefed and reunited with her family, while investigations continue to dismantle the trafficking network and capture additional suspects related to this crime.

Responding to this development, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to pursue and capture all individuals involved in this offense. He reaffirmed the Command’s steadfast commitment to tackling human trafficking, prostitution, and associated crimes, while encouraging citizens to provide prompt and reliable information to the police.
