Eucharia Anunobi, a prominent actress and film producer from Nigeria, has opened up about the heart-wrenching circumstances surrounding the death of her only son, Raymond, which she attributes to alleged medical neglect at a hospital in Lagos.
Raymond was the sole offspring of Anunobi, whom she had with her former husband, Charles Ekwu. Their marriage lasted from 2000 to 2006 before they divorced.
During an episode of "The Honest Bunch Podcast," which was uploaded to YouTube recently, the 60-year-old actress revealed that her son suffered from sickle cell disease. This condition stemmed from the AS genotype that she and Ekwu both possessed.
Anunobi shared details of her experience, revealing that after returning from a trip abroad, she arranged for Raymond to go for a routine check-up at the hospital. The haematologist inquired if her son had ever undergone a blood transfusion, to which she replied affirmatively, stating it had occurred when he was a child, shortly before his father abandoned them.
Upon learning of Raymond's need for a blood transfusion to improve his blood count, she consented. However, while she stepped out to process the payment for the blood, a student doctor mistakenly extracted three pints of blood from her son instead of administering a transfusion.
Upon her return, Anunobi noticed that her son's condition had deteriorated, and he appeared jaundiced. The medical team attempted to save him, but despite their efforts, he passed away. She lamented, "So my son died because of medical negligence. But I have come to realize that it matters not how one dies; we all have our time."
Raymond lived for 16 years, six months, and 22 days, passing on August 22, 2017. The date of the interview coincided with what would have been his birthday, prompting her to reflect on their time together and express gratitude for the years they shared, even amidst her grief.
Anunobi has remained without children since Raymond's passing and has conveyed her thankfulness for having experienced motherhood, recognizing the invaluable lessons she learned during their relationship and her deepened faith as a result.
The actress also spoke about the challenges of her marriage to Ekwu, revealing that she single-handedly carried the financial burden during their union, despite her parents' warnings against the marriage. Although she once considered ending the relationship on discovering their shared genotype, Ekwu convinced her otherwise, leading to the birth of Raymond, who fell ill shortly after his first birthday, eventually diagnosed with the SS genotype.
Anunobi expressed disappointment over Ekwu's abandonment, which left her to cope alone with the responsibilities and struggles of parenting a sick child. "He is the same person who once promised to always be there for me, yet he left when things became tough," she said, reflecting on their tumultuous past.
