The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that flight operations to numerous Middle Eastern cities are being disrupted, leading to cancellations and delays. These issues stem from the closure of airspace in parts of the Middle East, which was initiated following strikes conducted by the United States and Israel targeting Iran.
In an official statement released on Saturday through its social media channels and signed by its management, FAAN indicated that the current airspace restrictions are significantly impacting flight movements to and from the affected areas.
"The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to inform the travelling public that ongoing airspace closures in parts of the Middle East are currently impacting flight operations to and from the region."
"Consequently, flights destined for Middle Eastern locations, including those operated by Emirates and Qatar Airways, departing from Nigerian airports, have been subject to cancellation or postponement."
"Passengers whose travel plans are affected by these disruptions are strongly advised to liaunt directly with their respective airlines. This is to obtain the most current information regarding flight status, explore options for rebooking, and receive further instructions."
"FAAN remains engaged in monitoring the evolving situation in close coordination with aviation authorities and airline carriers. Updates will be provided as developments warrant. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of the travelling public."
The announcement comes in the wake of a series of military actions on Saturday, where the United States and Israel reportedly carried out strikes on locations within Iran, resulting in reported explosions and smoke observed over Tehran. Subsequently, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Syria, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates declared partial or full closures of their airspace.
Several major international airlines, including Air France, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, and Air India, have also announced the suspension or cancellation of flights traversing specific areas within the region.
