The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) officially launched zero- emission electric transit services at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Friday, marking a significant step towards minimizing carbon emissions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Under this initiative, electric vehicles will now be used to transport passengers and staff throughout the airport premises.
FAAN stated that this project supports its renewable energy objectives and broader sustainability efforts aimed at enhancing environmental practices across its operations.
The electric transit services were developed in collaboration with Possible Electric Mobility and Zeut Energies.
During the project commissioning, FAAN's Board Chairperson, Abdullahi Ganduje, and the Managing Director and CEO, Olubunmi Kuku, were present, along with representatives from the partnering companies and other airport stakeholders.
Ganduje expressed that this initiative reflects the authority's dedication to adopting cleaner energy solutions within airport operations and acknowledged the Federal Government and the Ministry of Aviation for their support in launching this project.
Kuku highlighted that FAAN has been actively implementing measures aimed at lowering energy consumption across its facilities, which include the installation of energy-efficient lighting, the deployment of solar-powered systems at airport terminals, and efforts to improve waste recycling practices. She noted that the introduction of electric vehicles is part of a comprehensive strategy designed to reduce the emissions associated with ground operations at airports.
Following the launch, Ganduje and Kuku inspected the newly introduced electric buses and cars as part of the programme. FAAN reiterated its promise to embrace energy-efficient technologies in efforts to modernize airport infrastructure and mitigate the environmental impacts linked to aviation activities.
