A father has been found responsible for the murder of his five-week-old daughter following a string of horrific injuries inflicted upon her throughout her life. Sean Jefferson was convicted at Stafford Crown Court on March 16, 2026, for his role in the brutal death of Darcy-Leigh.
During the trial, evidence presented revealed that the baby suffered 47 rib fractures along with catastrophic head injuries, the result of ongoing abuse.
The court also found that Darcy's mother, Amy Leigh Clark, aged 34 and residing in Lichfield, was guilty of allowing the death of her child, although charges of murder against her were discarded.
Authorities were alerted on Mother's Day in 2022 when paramedics discovered baby Darcy unresponsive at her residence in Burntwood, leading to the swift arrest of both Jefferson and Clark the subsequent day. Tragically, the infant succumbed to her injuries in the hospital shortly after being found.
Investigations confirmed that Darcy's demise stemmed from a serious head injury, with police indicating that the abuse was not a one-time event. A representative stated, "This was not an isolated incident of the physical abuse Darcy was subjected to. Throughout the five weeks of her short life, she was physically assaulted on a repeated basis. By the time she died, she sustained 47 rib fractures and fractured legs, which had occurred on at least three different occasions. These were not the only injuries cruelly inflicted on her."
DCI Ian Fitzgerald commented, "Today's verdict concludes a profoundly distressing case surrounding the murder of five-week-old Darcy. Her short life and tragic death must not be forgotten. Darcy was violently abused and killed by her father, while her mother stood by. These were the individuals who were meant to care for her. This was a despicable act against a defenseless child."
He expressed condolences for Darcy's older sibling, who has endured immense loss throughout the case. He also praised the commitment of all law enforcement personnel involved in the investigation, as well as the legal representatives for their dedication to the case.
Thirty-five-year-old Sean Jefferson from Walsall was convicted of murder after an eight-week trial, along with charges of causing or allowing the death of a child and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Meanwhile, Amy Leigh Clark was also found guilty of allowing the death of a child.
Both Jefferson and Clark are scheduled for sentencing at Stafford Crown Court later this year.
