The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has officially called off its strike action that was in solidarity with the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) of the FCT Administration.
Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, the Chairman of the FCT NUT, made the announcement while speaking to journalists at the Teachers’ House in Gwagwalada on Tuesday.
He highlighted that this decision comes after a larger industrial action by JUAC and other affiliated unions under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the FCT.
Shafas elaborated that the suspension was a direct result of a conciliatory meeting held with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on February 3, 2026. Following this meeting, the congress instructed its member unions to suspend the ongoing strike.
“In light of this development, we appeal to all primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT to return to work without delay. We want to assure our teachers that the union is steadfast in its pursuit of their outstanding entitlements,” he stated.
The NUT chairman also mentioned that while they await the implementation of the agreements reached during the meeting, the union will keep its members updated on any further course of action. He expressed gratitude for the perseverance and unity demonstrated by members during the strike period.
It is noteworthy that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had met with leaders from various labor organizations and affiliate unions earlier on Monday to work towards resolving issues related to the non-payment of outstanding entitlements for both FCTA and FCDA staff.
