The Federal Government has given the nod for the dualization of the Bodo-Bonny Road, aiming to improve transit connectivity with the East-West Road.
Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, made this revelation to reporters during a project inspection tour in the South-South region over the weekend. He noted that President Bola Tinubu has instructed the expansion of the road starting from the Bodo area to link it with the East-West Road, which serves as a critical transport route in the area.
Umahi further indicated that the President also sanctioned the addition of solar lighting and tree planting along the 37.9-kilometer road, which links Bonny Island to the mainland, as part of aesthetic enhancements.
He explained that the dualization will utilize concrete materials and is projected to be finished within eight months.
While visiting the Akpajo Bridge section of the East-West Road dualization, Umahi expressed his approval of the ongoing progress but encouraged the community to actively participate in protecting the infrastructure. He expressed concern over the use of heavy trucks on completed road sections, warning that such activities might diminish the longevity of the road.
During his visit to the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, the Minister praised GRB Construction for its rehabilitation and expansion efforts covering the distance from the Aba end to the Imo River Bridge boundary with Rivers State.
Additionally, Tarilade Ewereama, the Federal Controller of Works in Rivers, confirmed that repairs on the damaged sections of the road have been finalized.
“All works are up to standard, and the contractor is fulfilling necessary milestones. The project is slated for completion before the year ends,” she stated.
The Project Manager at GRB Construction remarked that the rehabilitation and expansion have significantly increased the road's life expectancy, coupled with upgraded drainage systems designed to accommodate heavy traffic.
Chioma Nweze, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement for the South-East, commended the government for the initiative, calling it a vital step toward enhancing inclusivity within the region.
She encouraged residents of both the South-East and South-South to support the administration in delivering more democratic benefits.
