The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has confirmed that the federal government is moving forward with the implementation of a 40 percent increment in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for members of ASUU, starting from January 1, 2026. This action aligns with the previously established agreement with the academic union.
In addition, Dr. Alausa highlighted the implementation of necessary welfare provisions from the renegotiated agreement, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the well-being of academic staff and the stability of the higher education system through the renewed hope initiative.
A statement released late Monday and signed by Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations, noted that several federal universities have already begun to implement the increase in their salary payments.
To ensure a uniform application across the board, the Minister has instructed that all federal universities be formally notified to integrate the approved increment into their payroll systems so that every qualifying academic staff member can benefit.
Alausa also emphasized the importance of adhering to the implementation framework for the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA) in his directive to the vice chancellors of federal universities.
He urged the vice chancellors to use their resources effectively to facilitate the smooth introduction of this allowance.
Further, the Minister confirmed that the necessary adjustments have been recorded and disseminated by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), and that their inclusion in the 2026 budget adheres to statutory protocols.
He encouraged university administrations to proactively utilize their available resources to ensure timely payment of the approved CATA in accordance with NSIWC regulations.
Dr. Alausa underlined that the prompt execution of the CAA increase and CATA would bolster the academic environment, lift staff morale, and lead to improved outcomes in teaching, research, and learning across universities in Nigeria.
Moreover, the minister reiterated the federal government’s commitment to honoring agreements made with stakeholders in the education sector, stressing the need for ongoing constructive dialogue, transparency, and efforts towards enhancing the quality of education in the country.
