Google, in collaboration with Slum2School Africa and a cadre of well-known Nigerian creative talents, has introduced "Stories from Our Home." This pioneering initiative centres on a collection of Nigerian folktales and a colouring book designed for children. The project's core objective is to address the scarcity of educational materials in Nigeria by distributing 1,000 books to primary school students in underserved communities. It specifically targets a lack of creative resources in nursery classrooms, where children often lack basic supplies like colouring books and crayons.
The creation of the book involved using Google Gemini as a tool to transform African folklore into print-ready line art. A group of creators, including Broda Shaggi, Falz, and Layi Wasabi, participated in an "Imagination Workshop." During this event, they shared personal memories and cultural narratives, which were then processed by the generative AI to produce high- quality artwork for children to colour. Inked Memory handled the design and publication, ensuring the final product met educational and child-friendly standards.
Otto Orondaam, the Founder of Slum2School Africa, emphasized the organisation's long-standing belief in education as a poverty-alleviating force. He stated, "Education begins long before a child enters a classroom, starting with the stories they hear and the materials they hold. 'Stories from Our Home' is an extension of everything we stand for, ensuring that every child, no matter where they are born, has access to the resources and the identity that will shape their future."
The official launch took place at the Slum2School Innovation Hub in Lekki, featuring special reading sessions for the children. Olumide Balogun, Google West Africa Director, delivered the opening remarks and read the story of Nigeria's Great Rivers. Guest readers Nancy Isime and Bisola Aiyeola also shared tales of Nigerian heroes, including the Walls of Benin and Queen Moremi Ajasoro, underscoring the value of cultural heritage in literature.
Samuel Animashaun Perry, widely known as Broda Shaggi, expressed his personal connection to the project: "I know what it feels like to grow up without these things. I know what it means when a child does not have the basic tools that others take for granted. That experience never leaves you, and it is why I am committed to doing whatever I can to make sure young people today do not have to go through what I went through. Being part of this project, and seeing 1,000 packs go into the hands of these children, means everything to me."
At the launch event, each child received a Dream Pack containing the colouring book, crayons, notebooks, pencils, and educational games. This initiative highlights the significance of creative play in developing essential skills such as fine motor coordination, concentration, and imagination. By blending technology with traditional storytelling, the project aims to equip children in underserved communities with resources and a sense of identity crucial for their future development.
