The Federal Government has pledged to strengthen security measures in primary, secondary, and tertiary educational institutions across the country, asserting that it is essential for creating a safe learning environment for students.
Authorities have urged parents, guardians, and educators to actively participate in initiatives aimed at safeguarding schools as part of advancing the Safe Schools Initiative designed to protect children.
The Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), made this commitment during a meeting at the Ministry's headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, where he welcomed members of the National Parents Teachers Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN).
Reports by Daily Trust highlight growing worries regarding the safety of schools in recent years, due to escalating incidents involving attacks and abductions of students and teachers by armed groups in various regions of the nation.
These distressing occurrences have been especially noted in states such as Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kwara, leading to interruptions in academic activities and increasing anxiety among parents and stakeholders in the education sector.
While receiving an award from the leadership of NAPTAN, Musa emphasized that the Federal Government would continue its collaboration with parents, educators, and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of students.
The retired military general highlighted the critical role of security in facilitating education, stating, "Without security, there cannot be an effective learning environment. We are committed to working diligently to make our schools safe."
He further encouraged a unified effort among parents, teachers, the government, and society to ensure that every child has the opportunity to realize their full potential.
Musa praised parents and teachers as vital partners in the nation's development, underlining that quality education and discipline are crucial for nurturing responsible citizens and mitigating social instability.
Earlier, NAPTAN President Haruna Danjuma remarked that the Defence Minister's appointment reflects his longstanding dedication to national security, particularly his contributions to launching the Safe Schools Programme during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff.
He noted that this initiative has provided much-needed reassurance to parents and promoted school attendance in light of various security threats, including kidnapping and attacks on educational facilities.
According to the association, enhanced security measures around vulnerable schools have benefited parents nationwide. The award presented was intended to motivate the minister to maintain and extend these initiatives.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Richard Pheelangwah, also praised the minister's leadership, describing the recognition as a testament to his commitment to both national security and the future of Nigeria's youth.
He affirmed that the Ministry would continue to work jointly with education stakeholders to ensure that educational advancement and security go hand in hand.
