The Federal Government has provided cash and food support to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at a camp in Kuchingoro, Abuja, in recognition of President Bola Tinubu’s 74th birthday on the weekend.
During the distribution event, Bernard Doro, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, reiterated the administration's dedication to enhancing the lives of vulnerable Nigerians nationwide.
He highlighted that the government's visit underscores its commitment to connecting with those in need, emphasizing that humanitarian interventions under the Renewed Hope Agenda should extend beyond short-term relief to fostering sustainable stability and self-sufficiency.
The minister stated, "Our initiatives focus on ensuring that displaced individuals are not just able to survive but can also reconstruct their lives with dignity and purpose."
Doro explained that through the One Humanitarian, One Poverty response framework, efforts are being made to transform relief support into chances for opportunity and a brighter future.
As a personal gesture, he mentioned, "As your Minister, I thought it important to pledge my own support, so I have arranged N10,000 for each of the 300 families here as a personal gift to remind you that we are in this together and that I am aware of your struggles."
Earlier in the program, Hon. Tijjani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), informed attendees that the Kuchingoro IDP camp was established in 2014 and currently accommodates 261 households, amounting to roughly 1,500 people, predominantly from Gwoza in Borno State and parts of Adamawa State.
He expressed gratitude to the minister for the significant interventions introduced shortly after his appointment, commending the minister's timely efforts.
He also noted that all households in the camp would be recipients of food items, while 50 elderly women were set to receive bedding, mats, and blankets, in addition to providing educational materials for 50 selected students within the camp.
