President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for the acquisition of an emergency medical helicopter, as announced by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate. This initiative is set to significantly bolster Nigeria's capacity for rapid medical response.

The Ministry of Health has initiated discussions with Airbus, a prominent European aerospace corporation, regarding the establishment of Nigeria's new Integrated National Ground-To-Air Health Emergency Management System. Minister Pate held meetings with Airbus executives and also visited an air ambulance facility in Lyon, France, which is supported by the French government, where he observed an Airbus emergency care helicopter.

Prof. Pate stated that this procurement is a key component of the Federal Government's wider strategy to renew and invest in the health sector, with the ultimate goal of improving emergency medical services across the country.

"As part of the health sector renewal investment initiative, we are enhancing Nigeria's public health infrastructure alongside the private sector's capacity for medical care, especially in emergency situations," Prof. Pate explained.

He further elaborated on the plans: "The National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme is undergoing a revamp, which includes introducing urban ambulances for cities and developing emergency systems for rural areas. Now, we are also addressing helicopter emergency medical services."
