In the early hours of Wednesday, a fire outbreak severely damaged sections of the Electric Appliances Market in Nnewi, located in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulting in the loss of property worth millions of naira.
The blaze reportedly ignited around 9:00 a.m., which triggered an immediate response from the Anambra State Fire Service, who quickly mobilized personnel and equipment to contain the flames.
Mr. Chukwudi Chiketa, the Chief Fire Officer of the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the occurrence to the media, stating that the fire affected five shops situated on the upper floor of a one-story building dedicated to electronic goods.
"The structure impacted is a one-story building. The fire affected approximately five shops located upstairs that house electronic items and their components," Chiketa explained.
He emphasized that the situation had been brought under control and indicated that there were no fatalities.
"The positive aspect is that we managed to control the flames, and thankfully, no lives were lost. Several shops both on the upper and lower levels were spared from damage," he noted.
Chiketa mentioned that the cause of the fire is still under investigation as authorities work to uncover the circumstances that led to the incident.
He urged both residents and traders to stay alert and suggested that they take proactive fire safety measures, including installing fire extinguishers in their shops before emergency teams arrive.
