Fire Devastates Over 80 Shops at Kano Timber Market

A disastrous fire has ravaged more than 80 shops at the Kasuwar Yan Katako (Timber market) in Kano State, resulting in significant losses. The Kano State Fire Service responded promptly to the emergency call early Wednesday morning.

An early morning blaze at the Kasuwar Yan Katako (Timber market) located in Rijiyar Lemo, within the Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State, led to the destruction of over 80 shops.

The Kano State Fire Service reported that the fire erupted on Wednesday, February 11.

According to a statement from the Service's Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, a distress call was received at approximately 4:28 a.m. from Kabiru Nafi’u, alerting them to the fire outbreak at the timber market.

Firefighters from the Dawanau, Rijiyar Zaki, and Bompai fire stations were dispatched to the location immediately.

Upon their arrival, they found the timber market—spanning around 500 by 500 feet—completely engulfed in flames, as detailed in the statement.

The inferno resulted in the total destruction of around 30 permanent shops and 55 temporary structures.

To battle the flames, three fire trucks, identified as Com 23, Com 17, and Com 2, were employed.

The Fire Service has indicated that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
