Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has urged fellow citizens, particularly family members, to demonstrate kindness and support for the elderly to help enhance their quality of life.
She made these remarks during the launch of the 'Arise Senior Citizens Centre,' located along the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the centre aims to offer vital services tailored to senior citizens, which include healthcare, recreational activities, and opportunities for social engagement.
During her address, Tinubu expressed her gratitude to Governor Umo Eno for his initiative in constructing the centre and his dedication to the welfare of elderly individuals in the state.
She noted that this initiative complements President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which is designed to ensure that 'no Nigerian is left behind, particularly the elderly.'
"We must cultivate compassion for the older generation; aging can be an incredibly solitary time, especially after losing a partner," stated Tinubu.
"At this stage, individuals often feel emptiness as children grow up and leave home to establish their own lives. This centre you have established will help them lead longer, fulfilling lives," she added.
Additionally, the First Lady urged other governors to consider establishing similar centres in their respective states to support elderly citizens.
Tinubu highlighted her previous efforts to propose a special economic support initiative for older adults during her time in the Senate, which unfortunately did not materialize.
She appealed to the current Senate to revisit proposed legislation aimed at providing financial stipends to elderly citizens, underlining that these individuals have considerably contributed to society throughout their lives.
She voiced her disappointment at the sight of aged citizens facing abandonment and neglect.
"Aging should be characterized by comfort, respect, and continued involvement in the community rather than isolation and neglect," Tinubu emphasized.
Earlier, Governor Eno remarked that the initiative for the centre was inspired by his late wife, Patience Eno, whose compassion for the elderly was the driving force behind this project.
He also affirmed that his administration values the contributions of senior citizens who have dedicated their lives to serving the community.
Governor Eno confirmed that his government has been providing monthly cash assistance of N50,000 to 600 older adults across all 369 wards within the state.
He reassured that the administration would continue its efforts in ensuring that elderly citizens have access to basic healthcare services.
"This project was very meaningful to my late wife, and I believe she would be pleased with the inauguration of this facility today," Eno remarked.
In her speech, Mrs. Helen Obareki, the daughter of the governor, acknowledged her mother’s legacy of compassion which inspired the facility's establishment.
Obareki expressed gratitude to the First Lady for honoring her mother's vision through the inauguration of the centre.
