Authorities have taken five individuals into custody for reportedly defecating in public areas on Lagos Island.
The arrests were conducted in the early hours of Thursday, March 12, as reported by Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, on the social media platform X.
Wahab explained that the suspects were apprehended during a morning operation in the vicinity of Ebute Ero.
"The anti-open defecation squad was actively monitoring the area in a bid to tackle public defecation and other environmental issues," he stated.
"Five offenders were caught during this operation."
The commissioner noted that the suspects were subsequently transported to the enforcement office located at Sura-Simpson for further inquiries.
He further indicated that they would later be handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps headquarters in Oshodi for prosecution under applicable environmental regulations.
Wahab emphasized that this operation is part of the state government's broader initiative to combat open defecation and enhance public sanitation across Lagos.
The Lagos State Government has repeatedly cautioned both residents and visitors against engaging in open defecation.
