Former Arsenal player Alexander Manninger has passed away at the age of 48 due to a fatal accident in Austria.
Local authorities reported that the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper lost his life when his vehicle collided with a train at an unmanned level crossing in Nussdorf am Haunsberg, near Salzburg.
Throughout his career, Manninger achieved significant success across Europe. He was a member of Arsenal's team that secured both the Premier League and FA Cup titles in the 1997-98 season. Although he had limited league appearances, he played a vital role during a critical phase of the season, filling in for David Seaman and contributing to the team's title pursuit with several shutouts.
He subsequently played for numerous prominent clubs, including Juventus, where he won a Serie A championship, and also represented Fiorentina, Torino, Bologna, and Augsburg. His career also included a brief period at Liverpool before his retirement in 2017.
Internationally, Manninger earned 33 caps for Austria and participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2008. After concluding his football career, he returned to his trade as a qualified carpenter, establishing a business focused on property renovations in Austria.
Numerous tributes have been extended from the football community. Red Bull Salzburg, one of his former clubs, stated: “We are mourning the loss of our former goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who tragically passed away in a traffic accident. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends.”
Fans and former colleagues have also paid tribute, remembering him as a significant figure in Arsenal's historic double-winning campaign and a respected professional throughout his football journey.
