The governing body for athletics worldwide, World Athletics, has turned down an application from Nigerian athlete Favour Ofili seeking to switch her national representation to Turkey. Ofili had reportedly aimed to compete for Turkey in the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games.

In a formal statement released on Thursday, April 16, the World Athletics Nationality Review Panel announced its decision, indicating that the application, submitted by the Türkiye Athletics Federation, would not be granted. The panel reviewed the details of Ofili's request.

The panel stated that approving such a transfer would compromise fundamental rules and guidelines that govern international athletics competitions. Consequently, the application has been denied.

“The Application by the TAF for Favour OFILI (the ‘Athlete’) to transfer allegiance from NGR to TUR is not approved,” the World Athletics panel communicated in its ruling.

The members of the panel who made this determination were Donna Raynor, Cydonie Motherskill, and Susanne van Waert.
