Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has suffered the loss of his mother, Hajiya Umma, as confirmed by family sources to ARISE News.
She passed away in Egypt on Friday, where she had been receiving medical care.
El-Rufai was present in Egypt but returned to Nigeria to respond to an invitation from anti-corruption agencies shortly before her death.
The ex-governor had faced scrutiny regarding alleged financial mismanagement during his time in office, which he has denied.
Hajiya Umma's death follows the recent passing of his sister-in-law, Safiya Ali Rufai, who died on March 20, 2026, after a brief illness.
The family expressed their sorrow over this latest bereavement, indicating it is a challenging time for them all.
According to sources, the late matriarch had been struggling with age-related health issues that had recently worsened.
Family representatives confirmed that she had been a source of support for El- Rufai, especially in light of his current legal challenges involving the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The recent developments in her health reportedly occurred alongside El-Rufai's ongoing investigations, suggesting a stressful period for the family.
The family has committed to praying for her, seeking forgiveness for her shortcomings and asking for her place in Aljannatul Firdaus.
While El-Rufai remains in custody under the ICPC’s investigation, he was previously brought before a Federal High Court in Kaduna, facing multiple charges related to alleged money laundering and fraud. He has been ordered to remain in custody while awaiting further proceedings set for March 31, 2026.
This unfortunate personal loss comes at a time when El-Rufai is already embroiled in significant legal and political challenges. Having served as governor from 2015 to 2023, El-Rufai has played a prominent role in Nigeria’s political scene, also holding the position of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in the past.
The new tragedy compounds his legal woes, as he has been alleged to have committed financial misconduct during his governorship, a matter he is set to contest.
His mother's passing adds a profound personal element to this critical juncture in his life, and sources indicate a strong bond between them, having been raised predominantly by her after losing his father at a young age.
El-Rufai continues to be a significant figure in Nigeria’s political sphere.
