Misty Roberts, the former mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, has been convicted of having sexual intercourse with her son's 16-year-old best friend at a party filled with alcohol.
According to reports by Upper Michigan Source, the jury took less than one hour to deliberate before reaching a guilty verdict in Roberts's trial.
The 43-year-old was found guilty of charges related to carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior involving a juvenile.
This verdict stems from testimonies during the trial where the 16-year-old boy involved stated that he was intoxicated at the time the sexual incident occurred.
As a result of her conviction, Roberts is required to register as a sex offender, with her sentencing hearing scheduled for April 17.
According to legal sources, the charge of carnal knowledge can lead to a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, while the indecent behavior charge can result in up to seven years of incarceration.
The jury heard testimonies from various witnesses, including an incident where Roberts's son stated that he saw through a crack in the window as his mother engaged with his friend.
Additionally, the mayor's daughter testified that she witnessed Roberts and the 16-year-old male "on top of each other."
Roberts’s former sister-in-law, Jill Weaver, also provided testimony, stating that she heard the teenage son yelling about his mother having sex with his best friend following the drunken pool party, when she was called to help resolve the situation.
After that night, the victim’s mother texted Roberts expressing concern about a potential pregnancy, to which Roberts responded by assuring her that she was using birth control, as revealed in the texts.
Friends of Roberts suggested that she should take the morning-after pill as a precaution.
Moreover, a DoorDash driver testified that they had delivered emergency Plan B contraceptive pills to Roberts’s residence in 2024, presumably related to the alleged sexual encounter.
Before her arrest in 2024, Roberts resigned from her position as mayor of DeRidder, a small town with a population of approximately 9,800 residents.
