French law enforcement officials have successfully stopped a potential bombing incident outside a Bank of America location in Paris, taking a man into custody who was allegedly preparing to activate a homemade bomb.
The operation took place in the 8th arrondissement of the city, near the iconic Champs-Élysées, roughly at 3:30 AM local time.
As per investigators, police acted promptly just after the suspect had positioned a device that contained liquid suspected to be fuel alongside an ignition apparatus.
The counter-terrorism prosecutor in France has verified the suspect's detention. The case is currently classified as “attempted damage by fire or other dangerous means in connection with a terrorist attempt” as well as “terrorist criminal collaboration.”
Both the Paris judicial police and the General Directorate for Internal Security are involved in the ongoing investigation. France's Interior Minister Laurent Nunez commended the immediate action taken by the police.
“Congratulations to the rapid response team… their decisive actions averted a violent terrorist incident in Paris last night,” Nunez remarked. “We must maintain heightened vigilance. I commend all security and intelligence personnel who are completely mobilized under my authority given the global security context.”
Officials reported that the suspect was apprehended during the act, while another individual reportedly fled and is still unaccounted for. The device has been secured and will undergo forensic analysis as the probe continues.
