The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State is currently enduring a resurgence of conflict following the election of a new chairman from a faction aligned with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.

On Tuesday, in Jos, Peter Tongshep was chosen as the new state chairman of this faction.

Tongshep was selected along with 38 other executive members during what the faction termed a peaceful consensus congress.

The event was conducted under stringent security measures, with a significant presence of personnel to maintain order, and was overseen by a seven-member delegation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This congress drew notable individuals from the Wike faction, including former Sports Ministers Damishi Sango and Musa I. Azi, as well as prominent party actors Sarpiya Danyaro, Aminu Zang, Timothy Golu, and Rt. Hon. Johnbul Shekarau.

Dr. Samaila Rukuba, who introduced himself as the new PDP spokesman for the state, characterized the congress as “very peaceful and orderly.”

However, the officially recognized Plateau State chapter of the PDP quickly refuted claims of a new congress taking place.

In a statement from its State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Choji Felix Dalyop, the existing leadership under Hon. Raymond Dabo asserted that their governance was the product of a transparent and peaceful elective congress held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, which established the chairman and 38 other executives.

The statement emphasized that this exercise was monitored by INEC and carried out in accordance with both the PDP constitution and the Electoral Act.
