The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, has declared its intention to increase monitoring in high-risk areas due to a recent wave of accidents along the Agulu Lake route, which have resulted in 11 fatalities over the past month.

This was announced by the Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, during a comprehensive inspection of the accident-prone area, situated in Anaocha Local Government Area on Tuesday.

Asekhauno emphasized that the series of crashes at this specific location—four in a row—necessitated her visit, highlighting the tragic loss of 11 lives.

She noted that this initiative aligns with the Corps’ strategic objectives to minimize road accidents and engage various stakeholders in road safety efforts.

“The frequency of incidents at this location is alarming and primarily stems from the reckless behavior of certain drivers. These accidents are preventable, despite existing roadway issues,” she stated.

Asekhauno also extended her condolences to the families affected and the local community, stressing the need for immediate infrastructural improvements in identified black spots, including the potential installation of barriers as a temporary solution.

During the inspection, Nkechi Ogbuefi, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Anaocha Constituency, denounced the persistent vehicular accidents and expressed sympathy for her constituents.

She committed to engaging with the state government to explore feasible redesign options for the roadway and the surrounding lake area.

Furthermore, Okonkwo Emeka-Konti, Director of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Authority, ordered that suggested road safety measures, including the prompt installation of necessary road signage and barriers, begin immediately.

Stanley Enike, representing the Commissioner for Works and Chief Civil Engineer, assured that the outlined measures will be implemented without delay, which include creating barricades and adding rumble strips, pending the assessment of further modifications.
