President of Ghana, John Mahama, has voiced his hopes and prayers for Nigeria to achieve greater stability and progress. He stated that he prays for Nigeria to "get their act together" to prevent a situation where many Nigerians might feel compelled to seek refuge or opportunities in a smaller nation like Ghana.
During an address at an award ceremony, President Mahama highlighted the significant regional impact of Nigeria's performance. He explained that a prosperous and secure Nigeria contributes positively to the entire West African sub-region, thereby mitigating the pressure of economic migration towards Ghana.
"Nigeria is of keen security interest to us. If Nigeria does well, Ghana does well," President Mahama remarked. He further elaborated on the potential strain on Ghana, noting, "when you have cousins, 250 million of them, you want them to do well so that one million of them don't come drifting towards a small country like Ghana. So every day when I wake up, I pray for Nigeria 'God let Nigeria get their acts together.'"
This sentiment underscores the interconnectedness of the two West African nations and the broader regional dynamics influenced by Nigeria's economic and social conditions.
