The Intergovernmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) is seeking a collaborative relationship with media outlets to combat the escalating issues of money laundering and terrorism financing throughout the West African region and Nigeria.
During a courtesy call at the Media Trust Group headquarters in Abuja, the Head of Communications and Advocacy for GIABA, Tim Melaye, highlighted the growing concern over illicit financial activities on the continent. He pointed to prevalent crimes such as corruption, kidnapping, human trafficking, and drug trafficking as significant contributors to these challenges.
Melaye also expressed apprehension regarding the increasing spread of violent extremism across West Africa. Furthermore, he drew attention to emerging trends like the use of the real estate sector for money laundering purposes and a rise in organ trafficking targeting young people.
The primary objective of GIABA's visit to Media Trust Group, according to Melaye, was to establish a partnership aimed at enhancing public awareness and advocacy campaigns. "The visit is to ensure partnership for a peaceful, secure and economically viable nation and region through the instrumentality of the media," he stated.
In his remarks, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Media Trust Group, Ahmed I. Shekarau, affirmed the company's dedication to supporting initiatives that raise awareness and advocate against economic and financial crimes. He noted Media Trust Group's expansion into radio, television, and digital platforms, expressing enthusiasm for potential collaborations with organisations like GIABA to advance advocacy across diverse sectors.
