A tumultuous conclusion to a second-division football fixture in Spain saw Zaragoza goalkeeper Esteban Andrada physically confront an opponent after being dismissed. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, when Andrada struck Huesca defender Jorge Pulido.
Amidst the ensuing chaos, Huesca's goalkeeper, Dani Jiménez, also received a red card for his involvement in the melee, which involved punching Andrada.
The flashpoint happened in the closing moments of the game. Andrada initially shoved Pulido to the ground as the latter approached him. Following the referee's decision to issue Andrada a second yellow card for the initial shove, the goalkeeper pursued Pulido and delivered a punch to his face. This aggressive act triggered a widespread fight among players and staff from both clubs.
Following the incident, Andrada expressed deep remorse for his actions, stating, "I'm very sorry for what happened. It's not a good image for the club, for the fans, and especially not for a professional like myself, so I'm very sorry."
He reflected on his career, noting, "Throughout my career, I've only had one red card, and that was for a handball outside the area. It was a critical situation where I lost my focus and reacted that way."
Andrada reiterated his apologies, acknowledging his public role and promising to avoid such behaviour in the future. "I'm very sorry, and I won't do it again because I know that I'm a public figure, a professional with many years in my career, and I also want to apologize to Jorge Pulido because we're colleagues."
He took full responsibility for his loss of composure: "Honestly, it was my own fault; I lost my focus at that moment, and well, I'm here for whatever consequences the league may give me, or if they want me to come and give explanations, I'm available for that."
Real Zaragoza subsequently released an official statement indicating that the club would investigate Andrada's conduct and implement appropriate disciplinary measures.
The club condemned the goalkeeper's behaviour and described the scenes as detrimental to the sport, asserting that they did not reflect the values upheld by Real Zaragoza or its supporters.
A video capturing the incident was made available.
