The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results for the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for Private Candidates, held in the first series of 2026.

According to a statement from the council's spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina, only 32.72% of candidates earned credits in five subjects, which include essential subjects like English Language and Mathematics.

The examination took place between January 28 and February 14. Afterward, the scripts were marked at locations in Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna from February 26 to March 13.

Notably, 10,523 students registered for this year's examination, marking an 11.49% increase compared to the 9,438 candidates who registered in 2025.

Out of the registered number, 10,480 candidates actually sat for the exams across 166 centers throughout the nation.

Breakdowns of performance indicate that 4,598 candidates (43.87%) attained credits in five subjects, irrespective of whether these included English and Mathematics.

However, only 3,429 candidates, representing 32.72%, secured credits that met the requirements for admission to higher education institutions, a notable improvement from previous years where 30.95% and 26.96% met the same criteria in 2024 and 2025 respectively.

A gender analysis of the successful candidates shows that 1,847 (53.86%) were male while 1,582 (46.14%) were female.

The council also reported that of the 10,523 candidates, 5,106 (48.72%) of the candidates were male and 5,374 (51.28%) were female. This year's examination also included 43 candidates with special needs, such as those who are visually impaired or hearing impaired, for whom special arrangements were made.

As for the results processing, WAEC indicated that 8,418 candidates (80.32%) had their results completely processed and released, while 2,062 candidates (19.68%) are pending further processing due to errors originating from their end. The council is actively working to resolve these cases.

Additionally, the results of 75 candidates, representing a mere 0.72%, have been withheld due to allegations of examination malpractice, and these cases are currently under investigation.

Candidates are encouraged to check their results via the official WAEC portal and can also request digital copies of their certificates online. For those seeking physical copies, applications can be submitted through the council's certificate request portal.

WAEC expressed gratitude towards the governments, security agencies, and educational stakeholders for their contributions to ensuring the smooth conduct of the examination, while also congratulating the candidates on their performance.
