The Gombe State Police Command has detained two men following the discovery of a loaded pistol during a late-night patrol within the state capital.
According to official reports, the apprehended individuals, identified as 22-year-old Samuel Sunday from Layin Hashido Quarters and 24-year-old Enosh Seth Yakubu of Water Board Quarters, were intercepted around 10 p.m. on April 7 near Jiemere Hotel in the Orji Quarters vicinity.
The operation was conducted by officers part of "Operation Hattara," who were engaged in routine patrol duties. Their attention was drawn to the suspicious movements of the two men, prompting them to stop for questioning.
Preliminary interrogations took a turn when one of the suspects allegedly attempted to discard an item in an effort to conceal it from the officers.
This concealed item was subsequently retrieved by the police and identified as a FIE Corp Miami pistol, marked with breach number D847339, which contained a single 9mm live ammunition round.
Both suspects are currently in police custody. The recovered firearm and ammunition have been secured as evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Detectives are now focused on tracing the origin of the weapon and exploring any potential links between the suspects and other criminal activities within Gombe State.
Gombe State Commissioner of Police, Umar Chuso, commended the responding officers for their prompt and effective action, noting that the interception may have prevented a potential security incident.
The command reiterated its dedication to proactive policing and crime prevention throughout the state.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and to continue reporting any suspicious activities or providing valuable information to security agencies to help maintain public safety and order.
Further details regarding the investigation are expected to be released by the police.
