The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has imposed sanctions on 24 corps members stationed in Sokoto State for various infractions including absenteeism and abscondment.

This information was revealed by the State Coordinator, Usman Yakubu Yaro, during the passing-out ceremony for the 2025 Batch A, Stream I corps members on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

Yaro indicated that out of the punished corps members, eight will need to repeat their service year, while 16 others will face extensions of their service due to the violations committed throughout their tenure.

He emphasized the NYSC's stringent stance on maintaining discipline, making it clear that acts of truancy will be dealt with firmly and will not be condoned under any circumstances.

In contrast, Yaro praised the dedication of the majority of corps members, acknowledging that two outstanding individuals were awarded the Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Award in recognition of their significant contributions to community development.

Named after Sa’ad Abubakar, this accolade highlights the efforts of corps members who make a positive impact in their communities.

Yaro encouraged the outgoing corps members to continue representing the NYSC with integrity and to use the skills they developed during their service year wisely, as gaining white-collar employment is becoming increasingly tougher.

He also urged the corps members to avoid night travels, advising them to seek shelter in secure places such as NYSC lodges, other security facilities, or traditional institutions when necessary.

The coordinator thanked the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for his ongoing support to the NYSC, especially in terms of state allowances, and expressed gratitude to the Sultan of Sokoto for consistently backing youth- oriented initiatives.

Highlighting the deployment of corps members in rural areas, he noted that many, particularly health workers, have played essential roles in improving healthcare access while others have provided educational support in schools.

The event celebrated the successful conclusion of the service year, urging all corps members to uphold the values of discipline, patriotism, and commitment to national service.
