The federal government has urged aviation unions to avoid strike actions during disputes, highlighting that such actions impede economic progress and development.
In a speech made in Abuja at the 12th Edition of the Aviation Workers Week organized by the Joint Consultative and Negotiating Council (JCNC), Dr. Yakubu Kofarmata, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, appealed to union members to prioritize consultations, cooperation, and collaboration as essential steps toward achieving success in the aviation industry.
Kofarmata stated, "I want to emphasize that the mere thought of going on strike in this sector should be eliminated. We should not even entertain the idea. The very thought is detrimental. Our families, friends, and communities all depend on this sector."
He further questioned the message that a strike would convey, stating, "If we initiate a strike, what impression are we giving? That the industry is unsafe?"
The Permanent Secretary underscored that the welfare of workers is pivotal to the industry's overall success, asserting that any leader in the ministry must prioritize the well-being of its workforce.
He remarked, "The well-being of our workers defines our industry. If you hold a leadership position in this ministry and assume that you are the only important person, you need to reassess your perspective."
Kofarmata also urged civil servants to avoid internal conflicts and focus on unity within the workforce, pointing out, "Civil servants often write complaints against their own colleagues. In any kind of relationship—professional or personal—the principles of consultation, cooperation, and collaboration are vital. Conflict does not resolve issues; we should not aim for destruction."
Similarly, Comrade Hector Nnadi, Chairman of the JCNC, urged for stronger job security measures and the protection of employees amid the ongoing concessioning of some airports. He called for enhanced collaboration and partnership between the unions and the ministry to safeguard the interests of staff.
Nnadi acknowledged the efforts made by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and emphasized the need for collective action to protect workers’ rights and ensure the aviation sector remains attractive for both current and prospective investors.
