The Ondo State Government announced that the collapse of a two-storey building in Akure, which occurred on Tuesday, was primarily due to the use of inadequate materials and the non-adherence to established construction regulations.

Officials from the Ondo State Emergency Response, part of the Deputy Governor's Office, conducted an immediate assessment of the site where the incident took place. They concluded that the building collapse was preventable.

Frederick Orunko, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Ondo State Deputy Governor, along with Wellington Adebawo, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response, led the visit to the incident site located at Adegbola along Oyemekun Road in Akure.

The building, still under construction, fell while laborers and craftsmen were actively working.

Orunko mentioned that preliminary inspections indicated that the disaster might have been instigated by substandard building materials.

He noted that the construction was executed hastily, resulting in poor workmanship alongside a blatant disregard for approved building standards.

He referred to the collapse as a preventable tragedy, announcing immediate enforcement actions to seal the construction site and impose sanctions on responsible parties in accordance with the state's building and safety regulations.

Adebawo supported the findings by confirming that the condition of the site pointed to the likely causation of the collapse being compromised materials and expedited construction practices.

He asserted that appropriate penalties would be levied against the engineers and contractors involved, highlighting that negligence during construction would be met with appropriate action by the Ondo State Government.

He further mentioned plans to enhance the enforcement of safety standards and best practices within the construction sector across Ondo State, emphasizing that the aim was to integrate lessons learned from interactions with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

As a part of the updated safety initiatives, Adebawo announced that routine quality checks of ongoing construction projects would become standard practice throughout Ondo State.

Additionally, he stressed that all construction workers would henceforth be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while on site, reinforcing that the use of safety gear would be mandatory.

The Ondo State Fire Service Director, Folorunso Samuel, along with the Deputy Director of Operations, Falanu Kehinde, were also present during the inspection, aiding in evaluating the structural failure while ensuring the area was secured against additional risk.

The officials reaffirmed the Ondo State Government's commitment to safeguarding lives and properties via stringent regulation, proactive monitoring, and decisive enforcement of construction standards. They assured residents that decisive measures are being taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Although no fatalities resulted from the collapse, seven workers sustained varying injuries and were promptly taken to a local hospital for medical care after being rescued from the debris.

In a related incident, one person lost their life during a building demolition in Oba Ile, Akure North Local Government Area, just a week prior. The deceased, identified as Olu Bamgboye, reportedly died while overseeing the destruction of an antiquated structure when a concrete pillar fell unexpectedly, claiming his life before help could arrive.
