Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has commemorated the late former Head of State, Murtala Mohammed, as a paragon of patriotism, bravery, and selfless service, whose legacy continues to motivate subsequent generations of Nigerians.
Aliyu made this statement following his recognition with the Gen. Murtala Ramat Muhammed Meritorious Security Award during the General Murtala Mohammed Golden Symposium at Bayero University Convocation Arena in Kano.
The event, organized by the Kano Patriotic Front, aimed to honor the late leader who met his end in an assassination during a failed coup attempt half a century ago.
Representing the governor, his Special Adviser on Security, Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), conveyed the governor's gratitude to the event organizers for acknowledging him with the award.
In his acceptance speech, Aliyu dedicated the accolade to the constituents of Sokoto State and the members of the state's security framework, praising their dedication to maintaining peace and stability.
Reflecting on Murtala Mohammed's impactful life, Aliyu described him as a determined and forward-thinking leader who exhibited discipline, decisiveness, and a dedication to national unity throughout his brief yet influential administration.
The governor noted that Murtala's tenure was characterized by accountability, integrity, and a dedicated pursuit of Nigeria’s advancement.
“Murtala Mohammed remains a lasting symbol of courage and patriotism. His governance exemplified that sincere intent, discipline, and a love for the nation can catalyze transformative change, even within limited timeframes. His contributions to Nigeria's unity and stability should always be remembered,” Aliyu emphasized.
He urged leaders across all levels and the youth to imitate the late leader's characteristics of selflessness, transparency, and commitment to the nation.
The governor asserted that Nigeria's progress largely relies on leaders who prioritize national interests over personal benefits.
He reiterated his government's focus on enhancing security, promoting good governance, and fostering unity in Sokoto State, declaring that the award symbolizes both recognition and a re-commitment to duty.
Additionally, he prayed for the eternal peace of General Murtala's soul and encouraged Nigerians to draw inspiration from his life of service and sacrifice.
