Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has ordered the immediate and indefinite suspension of daily toll collections from petty traders who do not have permanent lockup shops, declaring the practice illegal.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, is part of the administration's initiative to stop illicit revenue collection and reduce the financial strain on vulnerable citizens.
Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government, conveyed the governor's announcement, stating that the decision aligns with new tax reforms designed to support those with lower incomes.
Governor Mbah issued a stern warning that any individual found collecting these prohibited fees, typically amounting to N100 or N200, regardless of whether the collection is for the government or private entities, will face severe legal repercussions.
Mr. Mbah further disclosed that a dedicated task force, headed by Mr. Onyia, has been established to ensure strict adherence to this new directive across all markets within the state.
He urged local government chairpersons, traditional leaders, market executives, community presidents-general, civil society groups, and all residents to report any violations of this order to the newly formed task force.
The governor specified that this suspension does not apply to traders operating from lockup shops, who are still required to pay their annual fees, which range from N30,000 to N36,000.
