The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, is celebrating his 63rd birthday today, an occasion that highlights his reputation for humility, accountability, transparency, and a deep commitment to public service.
Born on April 7, 1963, in Kafin-Hausa, Jigawa State, Governor Namadi, often referred to as Mallam or Danmodi, embodies a leadership style characterized by modesty and discipline, influenced significantly by his family's scholarly and religious background. His grandfather, the Chief Imam of Kafin-Hausa town, provided early moral and spiritual guidance.
Namadi's educational journey began at Kafin-Hausa Central Primary School, where he combined secular and Islamic studies. He later earned his Teachers’ Grade II Certificate from Mallam Madori Teachers’ College in 1982 and an Advanced Level Certificate with distinction in 1984. He pursued higher education at Bayero University Kano, graduating with a BSc in Accounting in 1987 and later obtaining an MBA.
After completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Makurdi, Benue State, where he served as an Audit Assistant, Namadi built a robust career in accounting and consultancy. Between 1988 and 1994, he worked at Abdu Abdurrahim & Co. Chartered Accountants in Kano. He then held positions at the National Board for Community Banks and Kaduna Textiles Limited before joining the Dangote Group, where he rose to Financial Controller.
Transitioning to public service, Namadi served at the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) from 2006 to 2013 in finance and accounts management roles. Before becoming Deputy Governor of Jigawa State in 2019, he served as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Planning from 2015 to 2019, spearheading fiscal reforms.
His career has been consistently marked by discipline and ethical conduct. Beyond his professional life, Namadi is known for his philanthropy and focus on grassroots development. His establishment of Danmodi Food Processing Limited, the first private rice milling company in Jigawa, has created employment for many.
Since assuming governorship on May 29, 2023, Governor Namadi has brought a fresh perspective to governance in Jigawa State. His administration's 12-point agenda focuses on key areas including infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, human capital development, and job creation.
In agriculture, the Jigawa Agricultural Revitalisation Programme (JARP) has supported over 60,000 farmers with inputs and mechanised services, while irrigation projects have boosted year-round farming and food production. The state is also promoting export crops like rice and sesame.
The education sector has seen renovations to over 700 classrooms and the recruitment of 1,500 teachers, with initiatives like the Girl-Child Support Programme enhancing enrolment. Healthcare has been bolstered by the Jigawa Health Access Programme (J-HAP), offering free maternal and child services, alongside the construction and upgrade of health facilities.
Significant infrastructure development includes over 500 kilometres of rural road construction, improving connectivity and trade. For human enterprise and job creation, the Jigawa Micro Enterprise Initiative has disbursed over ₦2.5 billion to SMEs, and vocational training centres have been enhanced to equip youth with modern skills.
The administration has been praised for its transparent budgeting and anti- corruption measures, adopting the Open Government Partnership (OGP) model. Security has also been prioritized through collaboration with local and national agencies and peacebuilding efforts.
Governor Namadi's leadership was recognized with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Award for Good Governance and Innovation in 2024, and Jigawa State has been noted for its budget transparency.
Future plans include initiatives for green energy development, agro-processing zones, and expanded digital infrastructure. At 63, Governor Umar Namadi is considered a pivotal leader for Jigawa State, with prospects for continued progress under his guidance.
