In a significant turn of events, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has revoked the indefinite suspension imposed on actress Halima Abubakar, coinciding with her recent public plea for financial aid to undergo surgery for a brain tumor.
Back in October 2024, Halima was suspended after a thorough two-year inquiry by a specially appointed panel concluded that she had defamed several fellow actors.
The AGN’s statement clarified that the panel discovered Halima had disseminated false information regarding its members and associates, notably the rumors about extramarital affairs involving prominent figures in the entertainment industry. The Guild subsequently announced an indefinite suspension, stating that she would be subject to further disciplinary proceedings.
Despite this, the AGN decided to lift the suspension amid Halima's urgent request for help and claims of insufficient support from her peers in the industry. The new development was communicated by Emeka Rollas, the outgoing national president of the Guild, during the inauguration of the new National Executive Council in Abuja, where he transferred leadership duties to Abubakar Yakubu.
Rollas noted that the Guild felt the need to reintegrate members who had faced suspensions under his administration. He expressed concern regarding Halima's situation, elaborating on her legal action against the Guild over claims for damages. He asserted that it would be unjust to leave her without support, given acting is her primary means of income.
In addition to Halima, suspensions were lifted for other Guild members, including Christopher Igboji, Chidi Concord, Dan Ewerem, and Jeff Okwute from the Enugu State chapter.
Furthermore, during an Instagram live session, Halima disclosed her dire health issues and ongoing eviction threats. She revealed she had already exhausted her savings to cover her mother's medical expenses from a previous surgery.
Struggling emotionally, she appealed for immediate assistance, stating that she feels abandoned by her peers and cannot reach out to many celebrities whom she knows for help, expressing her desperation for support in her time of need.
