Joani Reid, a lawmaker in the UK, has declared that she has neither visited China nor raised any topics related to the nation in her parliamentary duties after her husband was apprehended on charges of espionage for China.

Her spouse, David Taylor, is one of three individuals taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police under the National Security Act 2023. The detained individuals, aged 39, 43, and 68, remain in police detention.

In light of these developments, Reid expressed her belief that her husband has not contravened any laws. "I have never seen anything that would lead me to suspect my husband has broken any law. I am not involved in my husband’s business dealings, and neither myself nor my children should be implicated in this investigation by media outlets," she stated.

Reid also stressed that throughout her tenure as a Member of Parliament, she has had no business interactions with China. She noted, "I have never traveled to China, nor have I addressed issues concerning China in the Commons. I have not posed questions regarding China-related topics. To my knowledge, I have had no encounters with Chinese businesses, diplomats, or government officials, and I have never voiced any concerns on behalf of Chinese interests to ministers or others."

Additionally, Reid highlighted that her political principles do not align with support for the Chinese government, asserting, "I am a social democrat who champions freedom of expression, trade unions, and free elections. I do not endorse or justify the dictatorial rule of the Chinese Communist Party."

Earlier in a parliamentary session, UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis confirmed that Chinese authorities in both London and Beijing have been formally confronted regarding the arrests.

He informed Members of Parliament, "To be clear, should there be conclusive evidence of attempts by China to meddle in the UK's sovereign matters, we will implement strict repercussions and hold all involved parties accountable. The government is committed to reinforcing the resilience of the UK’s democratic institutions and processes against such activities."

Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated that the arrests are part of a broader investigative effort. She mentioned, "Today’s arrests are a component of a proactive inquiry. While these are grave allegations, we do not perceive an immediate or direct threat to the public. Our investigation is ongoing, and we appreciate the public’s continued support."
