A catastrophic accident has claimed the lives of no fewer than six individuals in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, following a collision involving a fuel tanker. The incident, which also left numerous persons with injuries, occurred along the Beere/Agodi Road and saw the destruction of at least six commercial tricycles.
According to witnesses, the driver of the tanker lost control of the vehicle near the Beere area. It subsequently struck two tricycles, killing two passengers immediately. The truck continued its uncontrolled journey towards the Oje market vicinity.
Despite efforts to halt its path, the truck proceeded, tragically resulting in the deaths of four additional individuals in the vicinity of the bustling market. All six fatalities were pronounced dead at the scene. Those who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical attention at various hospitals throughout the city.
One survivor, identified as Kamoru, recounted his narrow escape, stating, "The truck rammed into my tricycle, but I managed to survive."
A relative of one of the deceased shared a poignant story, revealing that the victim had recently celebrated the birth of his child. "My brother named his daughter just three days ago. Now he is gone. He initially survived but lost both legs before eventually dying in the hospital," the relative disclosed tearfully.
Gafaru, an okada rider and eyewitness, expressed concerns that the actual casualty count might be higher. He noted, "There were bodies packed in bags that could not be immediately identified."
A senior police official confirmed the tragic event, indicating that two of the deceased and the damaged vehicles had been transported to the Mapo Divisional Police Station. The officer further stated that the investigation into the incident would be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.
