In Minneapolis, USA, agents from ICE engaged in actions that involved deploying tear gas and pepper spray against a large group of demonstrators, some of whom were accompanied by children.
The situation escalated when officers shot a man in the leg after pursuing him in a car, alleging that he was unlawfully in the country from Venezuela.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the man exited his vehicle and had an "altercation" with an ICE officer. This led to two other individuals approaching from a nearby location and purportedly "attacking" the officer.
The DHS stated, "The officer, fearing for his well-being and safety due to being ambushed by three individuals, discharged his weapon in defense."
In the area close to where Renee Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer a week earlier, residents gathered and began to whistle to warn one another of the ICE presence.
Witnesses reported that officers initiated the use of pepper spray and tear gas on the assembled protesters, even though children were present in the vicinity.
Children were observed with runny noses and irritated eyes as they were moved away after being subjected to the chemical irritants.
Local officials in Minneapolis have condemned the shooting and the use of tear gas against residents, declaring to ICE, "Leave the city and state immediately. We stand with our immigrant and refugee communities – you have our complete support."
