The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has initiated a joint nationwide verification and monitoring process for constituency and zonal intervention projects.

The exercise for the Northwest zone was officially launched in Kano on Wednesday, 28 January 2026. Its primary objective is to ensure that all federal projects adhere to the authorized specifications, thus promoting transparency and ensuring the Nigerian populace receives value for their money.

During the launch, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, represented by Olatunde Ajayi, the Director of the Special Projects Unit, delivered a firm warning to contractors involved in these projects.

He stressed that the Ministry implements a zero-tolerance policy against poor workmanship and project neglect.

"The Ministry will not hesitate to call contractors to account for any deficiencies detected or demand restitution to the government’s coffers where projects obviously do not fulfill their contractual commitments," Belgore emphasized.

In Kano, the joint inspection team toured vital sites, including a sports complex that features a mini-stadium and an indoor sports centre located in Gwarzo town.

The team also assessed solar power intervention projects situated at GSS Kwa in the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.

Upon reviewing the materials and execution techniques, Olatunde Ajayi expressed approval regarding the quality of work carried out by the contractors.

He indicated that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is particularly satisfied with the materials used at both Gwarzo and Dawakin Tofa locations.

While the ICPC team noted some "minor technical discrepancies" during their evaluation, they praised the overall quality of the construction work.

Contractors were encouraged to address the minor concerns identified and expedite the remaining stages of the projects to ensure timely completion for the benefit of surrounding communities.

Discussing the ICPC's role in the inspections, Bello Idris Bakori, the head of Constituency Projects Tracking, clarified that their engagement is part of a proactive strategy aimed at averting corruption and discouraging unethical practices in public spending.

He assured that all findings would be documented and pursued in accordance with existing laws to protect public interests.

The verification effort is being conducted concurrently across all states where the Ministry has implemented constituency projects, with the reports expected to inform future planning and interventions.
