The Commissioner of Police for Benue State, Ifeanyi Emenari, announced on Tuesday that the Inspector-General of Police has issued an ultimatum to completely eliminate banditry in the state by the close of 2026.
Emenari shared this information at the police headquarters in Makurdi while speaking to journalists after a walkathon event organized by the command in celebration of the 2026 Police Week.
He elaborated that the IGP's directive includes the provision of necessary personnel and logistics intended to bolster security operations throughout the state.
The police commissioner also emphasized the substantial support from the Benue State government under Governor Hyacinth Alia. He added that the police command is collaborating closely with various security agencies and the chairpersons of all 23 local government councils to combat insecurity effectively.
Emenari described the 2026 Police Week as a testament to the ongoing efforts to enhance security and foster improved collaboration among stakeholders focused on protecting lives and property.
He reassured the community that the police will maintain the progress achieved thus far and encouraged residents to assist law enforcement by providing reliable information to help identify criminal actors.
The commissioner expressed gratitude to the officers and other security personnel who participated in the walkathon and recognized the media's role as a vital ally in efforts to promote peace.
