The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, praised journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for their contributions to public awareness and national progress.

Disu made these remarks on Saturday during the Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, where he underscored a bond of mutual respect and professionalism with the media.

He asserted that journalists should be viewed as esteemed professionals rather than beggars, highlighting their critical role in influencing public debate and ensuring accountability.

"I have always maintained a respectful relationship with journalists, acknowledging them as professionals who merit respect and should not be perceived as beggars," he stated.

The police chief called for a deeper partnership between law enforcement and the media, suggesting that such collaboration could foster greater public trust and better communication regarding security matters.

He urged both police personnel and journalists to conduct themselves with integrity, emphasizing that exemplary behavior leaves a lasting impact on society.

In response, Grace Ike, chairperson of the NUJ-FCT Council, congratulated the IGP on his appointment and recognized him as a long-time ally of the press. "We have confidence in your leadership and pledge our commitment to partnering with the police to report on security issues with objectivity," she remarked.

Ike reaffirmed the council's dedication to responsible journalism and support for endeavors aimed at enhancing security and governance in the region. Additionally, she announced plans to invite the IGP as a guest of honor at the council's upcoming 2026 Press Week celebration.
