The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has submitted a comprehensive framework concerning the potential establishment of State Police forces to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin. This submission is a key step in the national conversation about decentralizing policing powers within Nigeria.

The presentation of the framework took place at Senator Barau's office in the National Assembly, Abuja, on a Thursday. Senator Barau chairs the Senate Committee tasked with reviewing the 1999 Constitution.

According to a statement released by Ismail Mudashir, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate, the 75-page document was delivered on behalf of the Inspector General. The framework was prepared by a committee established by the Nigeria Police Force, headed by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, specifically to examine the procedures for implementing State Police.

Bearing the title "A comprehensive framework for the establishment, governance and coordination of Federal and State Police," the document outlines the proposed operational methods for State Police entities.

The IGP articulated that the report incorporates the Nigeria Police Force's professional insights, strategic recommendations, and views gathered from extensive consultations. It also addresses the operational, legal, and administrative considerations involved in introducing State Police in Nigeria.

He expressed that the submitted report is expected to significantly aid the ongoing discussions and contribute to the development of well-informed, balanced, and practical decisions regarding this crucial component of the nation's security infrastructure.

The IGP further stated that the report was formally presented to the Chairman and members of the Constitution Review Committee, serving as the Nigeria Police Force's official input on the matter.

In his response, the Deputy President of the Senate lauded the Inspector General of Police for his proactive engagement concerning the establishment of state police, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration's objective to enhance national security.

Senator Barau affirmed that the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, under his leadership, would thoroughly examine the submitted framework, alongside all other memoranda received, as part of the broader review of the nation's constitution.
