Bakatsine, a security analyst, has disclosed images of several victims kidnapped by bandits in Agwara town, which serves as the headquarters for the Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State.
According to reports, the gunmen attacked the community, setting fire to the Divisional Police Station and a church while abducting at least five residents. The incident occurred early on Sunday, February 1, 2026, around 4 a.m., during which the assailants were engaged by police officers in a shootout.
After overpowering the police, the attackers proceeded to ignite the police station and continued their assault on the UMC Church and surrounding areas, resulting in the abduction of no fewer than five people.
A local resident, Mallam Hussaini Mohammed, confirmed that part of the church was also engulfed in flames. He noted that the assault has escalated fear among the townspeople, prompting many to flee the area for safety.
The Niger State Police Command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, verified the occurrence of the attack, asserting that there were no fatalities. He stated, "On 1/2/26 at about 3:40 a.m., armed bandits invaded the Agwara community, engaged in confrontation with the tactical team present, and employed what is suspected to be dynamite to set the station ablaze after overpowering them."
Furthermore, he continued, "Following that, the assailants moved to the UMC church, where they caused part of the structure to catch fire before proceeding to other locations, abducting around five individuals, whose identities are still being established. Monitoring is ongoing, and updates will be provided as they arise."
