The release of The Voice of Hind Rajab, an Oscar-nominated film that narrates the tragic story of a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed amid the Gaza war, has been blocked by India, as stated by its distributor.
Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, the docudrama portrays the real events surrounding the death of Hind Rajab, who lost her life while her family attempted to flee from the escalating conflict in Gaza.
Manoj Nandwana, representing Jai Viratra Entertainment, informed that an official from India’s Central Board of Film Certification conveyed that the film would not be granted approval for theatrical release due to concerns regarding its potential negative impact on India’s diplomatic relations with Israel.
Although Nandwana was not given a formal notice regarding a ban, he inferred that the film would not receive certification after an unsuccessful screening with the board. He raised questions about the rationale behind the decision, emphasizing that the movie has been screened globally, including in Israel, as well as at a film festival in Kolkata.
India has consistently maintained a careful diplomatic stance in the Middle East, enhancing cooperation with Israel particularly in defense and technology, while also historically supporting the cause of Palestinian statehood.
The decision to block the film has drawn backlash from opposition leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, who labeled the action as “disgraceful” and contended that such restrictions on films for diplomatic reasons erode freedom of expression within a democratic society.
Notwithstanding the backlash, the film has garnered international acclaim, having been nominated for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards and receiving the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, where it reportedly left a significant emotional impact on audiences during its premiere.
This incident underscores the ongoing struggle between artistic freedom and geopolitical agendas as governments navigate the cultural ramifications of fraught global issues.
