Indonesia has announced the suspension of all discussions pertaining to the peace initiative backed by Donald Trump due to heightened military tensions in the Middle East.
Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the choice to withdraw from conversations concerning the Board of Peace was influenced by the recent military escalations in the region. He noted that these developments have significantly reshaped the foreign policy priorities for nations involved in the initiative.
Sugiono further emphasized that international attention has now turned to the repercussions of the ongoing conflict involving Iran, asserting that the escalating security situation necessitates immediate diplomatic efforts among the directly affected nations.
He indicated that Indonesia plans to initiate thorough consultations with partners in the Gulf region, stressing that these countries are presently impacted by the increasing hostilities.
Additionally, Indonesia's participation in the proposed council has faced significant backlash from domestic political and religious groups, who argue that engagement in an initiative associated with the Trump administration may compromise Jakarta's historically strong support for the Palestinian cause.
In a related matter, the Indonesian Ulema Council has urged the government to entirely withdraw from the initiative, contending that the proposed body lacks credibility and effectiveness while military actions persist in the region.
